Dübreq iStylophone - User Guide

The Dübreq iStylophone is a faithful reproduction of the original Stylophone electronic musical instrument designed specifically for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch operating platforms.

MAIN SCREEN

The main screen is the Keyboard where you are able to play your favourite iStylophone tunes, and also Multitrack Record and Playback your performances. Your finger has replaced the Stylophone stylus, but otherwise the technique is the same as the original: press your finger on the keys, the key touched will illuminate and the classic Stylophone sound will pour forth.

As with the original Stylophone, the Keyboard is monophonic, which means you can only play a single sound at a time. However, as we’ve included the ability to Record/Playback up to three iStylophone tracks you can create your own Multitrack Recordings with any one of the three Tones included.

There are three main controls/switches on the keyboard screen:

• TONE - Selects your desired Tone, choose from: 1/Bass, 2/Mid or 3/Treble. You can either press the TONE switch to move it to the preferred tone or you can tap it to cycle through the three available positions.

• VIBRATO - Activates Vibrato On. Upon pressing the VIBRATO Switch all keys will be in Vibrato On mode, switching VIBRATO to the Off position returns the keys to standard sound mode (Vibrato On also functions in Playback and Record when switched to On).

• RECORD - Allows you to Multitrack Record and Playback your own tunes. Switching into RECORD mode starts a four beat count-in, after which recording begins. Move the RECORD Switch to OFF or to PLAY to stop recording, PLAY will playback what you’ve recorded. Two modes are available: Single PLAY, which just plays back a single pass of the notes you have recorded, and LOOP PLAY, which will return to the beginning of the track each time it reaches the end. And it will keep doing this forever (or at least until your iPhone/iPod Touch runs out of battery power).

OPTIONS PAGE

Touching the iStylophone logo on the keyboard screen switches the application to the OPTIONS page. There are eight different options here:

• PLAY – Returns you to the keyboard page

• LOAD – Presents you with a list of all your saved tracks, which you can then load for playback

• SAVE – Allows you to save the current recording

• CLEAR – Deletes the current recording

• PREFS – Allows you to set basic preferences. These are: LOOP PLAYBACK (as mentioned above) and RETAIN RECORDING ON QUIT, which saves the tracks you have recorded and then reloads them on start up

• TEMPO – Here you can set the tempo of the metronome that plays during recording.  Note that this function does not affect the playback of tracks already recorded

• HELP – Shows help

• ABOUT – Shows the Application information and Company details

Play Along with iTunes Music is available as standard on both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Simply start an iTunes song playing, launch iStylophone and Play Along.

Known Issues: Audible digital glitching on iPhone/iPod Touch headphone output.

The iStylophone was designed primarily to be used through the iPhone/iPod Touch 2G speaker output, as per the original 1968 Dübreq Stylophone - we are aware that many users will wish to use iStylophone through the headphone output. We apologise for the audible digital glitching when using the headphone output - rest assured we are working on a fix and an update with be issued shortly.
